Vernā Myers, Esq., principal of Vernā Myers Consulting Group, LLC (VMCG), is a nationally recognized expert on diversity and inclusion within law firms, law departments and law schools. Vernā is a dynamic speaker and creative advisor in support of creating inclusive environments and improving the recruitment, retention and advancement of underrepresented groups. VMCG has collaborated with over 100 legal and corporate clients to effect sustainable organizational change by conducting cultural assessments, developing comprehensive strategic diversity action plans, and facilitating compelling and interactive workshops in the U.S. and around the globe. A highly sought after speaker at numerous conferences worldwide, Vernā sponsors her own successful annual Opus Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Large Law Firms.
Vernā is the author of “Moving Diversity Forward: How To Go From Well-Meaning To Well-Doing,” published by the American Bar Association in 2011. A second book, “What If I Say the Wrong Thing? 25 Habits For Culturally Effective People” is set for release summer 2013, also by the ABA.
In 2010, Pepper Hamilton LLP awarded Ms. Myers its Diversity Champion award. In 2009 she was chosen as one of The Network Journal’s “25 Influential Black Women in Business,” and in 2008, one of The Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s “Diversity Heroes”.
Prior to establishing VMCG, Vernā was the first Executive Director of The Boston Law Firm Group, a consortium of firms committed to increasing racial/ethnic diversity. She served as Deputy Chief of Staff for the Attorney General of Massachusetts (1997-99), where she executed a comprehensive diversity and inclusion initiative: increasing minority recruitment; conducting diversity and sexual harassment trainings; and performing outreach to the state’s diverse population. Vernā practiced corporate and real estate law in Boston for six years at Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, LLP and Fitch, Wiley, Richlin & Tourse, LLP.
Vernā graduated from Harvard Law School and received a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Barnard College, Columbia University.

Please join us either on line or at LCCC for this webinar presentation on Learning Disabilities by one of the nation’s leading experts. In the first hour we will show his PBS Video “How Difficult Can This Be” which dramatizes the class room experience for people with learning disabilities. In the second hour, Dr. Lavoie will be presenting to us directly on how we can be more effective in helping students with learning disabilities succeed.
Dr. Richard D. Lavoie served as an administrator of residential programs for children with special needs for 30 years. He holds three degrees in Special Education and holds two Honorary Doctorates in Education from the University of Massachusetts (2003) and Mitchell College (CT – 2007). He has served as a visiting lecturer at many universities, and has been featured on national television programs, including the TODAY Show, CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America, ABC Evening News, and Walt Disney Presents.
Lavoie has served as a consultant on learning disabilities to the Public Broadcasting Service, New York Times, National Center for Learning Disabilities, USA Today, Girl Scouts of America, Child Magazine, INSTRUCTOR Magazine and National Public Radio.
In 2009, Rick was the recipient of the Learning Disabilities Associations of America’s Samuel Kirk award. He has the distinction of having delivered keynote addresses for all three of the major special needs advocacy organizations in the United States (Learning Disabilities Association, Council for Exceptional Children, Children with Attention Deficit Disorder).
Rick is the author of It’s So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success (Touchstone/Simon and Schuster, 2005), which addresses the direct link between learning disabilities and social skills issues that many children face. Rick provides specific strategies for parents, teachers, and caregivers about how to assist the child in making and keeping friends. The Library Journal praised the book as “a breakthrough.”
Many parents and professionals know Rick through his videos How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T. City Workshop, Last One Picked, First One Picked On: The Social Implications of Learning Disabilities, and When the Chips are Down: Learning Disabilities and Discipline. These classic, award-winning films have brought Rick’s sensitive and compelling message to countless thousands throughout the world. After viewing the videos, former First Lady Barbara Bush stated, “You really wowed us! I only wish that every parent and teacher in the United States today could also see your program.”
Lavoie’s recent videos Beyond F.A.T. City: A Look Back, A Look Ahead and It’s So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success are among the most widely distributed films in educational media. His book and PBS DVD on student motivation, The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child (2007) have been featured in USA Today.

Rossana will introduce us to some stories, faces, facts and challenges that illustrate the diverse experience of Spanish Speakers in the United States. She will also share some data and experiences of how the growing presence of Hispanic/Latinos keeps challenging communities in the USA and some tips and strategies to creating inclusive approaches. There will be some quizzes, video clips and a question and answer period.
Rossana is an experienced trainer and coach who delivers client-tailored cross-cultural and leadership training programs to support management, team building, leadership development, cross-cultural communication, diversity and inclusion. She has delivered programs in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America. She has also delivered webinars for many global virtual teams.
Born and raised in Mexico, Rossana received a master’s degree in Intercultural Management from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, and has completed a coach-training program at Newfield Network. She is currently working toward completing her International Coaching Federation (ICF) certification.
As a trainer-contractor in the last 15 years, she has delivered over 500 programs on leadership development and working across cultures, with a focus on Spanish-speaking countries. Rossana has also endeavored to share and educate on Latin American/Hispanic experiences in the United States to promote better understanding and integration of some newcomers and their local communities.
Rossana has contributed to an online development tool, Cultural Detective: Mexico, the book Global Diversity: Winning Customers and Engaging Employees within World Markets, and the publication What Every Immigrant Needs to Know.
Her clients include industrial, government, and non-profit sectors. We learn gender roles from the time of birth; most are so ingrained that we experience them as “natural.” And yet we know that gender role assignments and expectations vary across time and across cultures. What are gender roles? How do we learn them? What social and political functions do gender roles play in our society? How might we “unlearn” gender roles that reinforce negative stereotypes, hinder equality, and undermine the ability of humans to achieve their full human potential? In this interactive workshop, we will explore these questions, critically thinking about both how gender role expectations and norms affect our sense of self, our interpersonal relations, and our family and work dynamics. We will explore examples from participants’ own lives and experiences as well as those drawn from the international and cross-cultural learning.
Sharon M. Meagher, Ph.D. is Chair of the Department of Latin American Studies and Women’s Studies (LA/W/S), Director of Women’s Studies, and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Scranton. A founding member of the University of Scranton’s women’s studies program, she is now founding Chair of the multidisciplinary department (LA/W/S) that houses the women’s studies program. Meagher led the development of the University of Scranton’s major in Women’s Studies. Meagher was also a curriculum consultant and first instructor of the master’s degree program in Gender, Culture, and Development at the Kigali Institute of Education in Rwanda. She has led women’s and gender studies workshops in Mexico, Rwanda, and in the United States. Meagher’s publications include: Women and Children First: Feminism, Rhetoric, and Public Policy (SUNY Press, 2005) and Philosophy and the City: Classic to Contemporary Writings (SUNY Press, 2008). She teaches courses on feminist theory, ethics and social justice, urban theory, and women and development in the global South. Meagher is co-founder and co-Director of the Public Philosophy Network, an organization that supports and encourages publicly engaged philosophical research, teaching, and social action projects. She is the principal of PraXis Edu, a higher education consulting firm that specializes in civic engagement, diversity, and sustainability education efforts.
MARIA COSTA: MACHO MEN AND THE WOMAN WHO LOVE THEM

Description: King’s College welcomes actress and comedian Maria Costa! Costa will screen her award-winning show, Macho Men and the Women Who Love Them: Live from the Kodak Theatre, an insightful and humorous portrayal of gender roles, relationships, cultural diversity, and family dynamics. Costa co-wrote, co-produced, directs, and stars in this inspirational and comedic one-woman production, which has sold out performances worldwide. In the show, she performs various roles, such as her ultra-macho father and her overly critical mother. Macho Men has won several awards, including a prestigious Imagen Award for Best Theatrical Production and the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival Maverick Award. After the screening, Costa will conduct an educational talk-back session in which she will discuss her creative process as a performing artist and writer as well as her experience as a Latina woman in the entertainment industry, having performed in a number of TV series like Ugly Betty and Dangerous Minds.

Eddie Moore, Jr. has his Ph.D. in Education/Social Foundations from University of Iowa, his Master of Arts in Education Administration from Loras College, and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Cornell College. Recognized nationally and internationally as a dynamic and committed presenter, Eddie seeks to provide ideas, possibilities, opportunities, and the motivation needed for making creative and positive contributions to a fast-paced and evolving society.
Dr. Moore currently serves as Director of Diversity at Brooklyn Friends School in Brooklyn, NY. Prior to holding his position at Brooklyn Friends School, Dr. Moore was Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Intercultural Life at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. In 1999, he founded the White Privilege Conference, now in its 14th year. The next conference session will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on March 26-29, 2014, and is entitled “Building Relationships! Strengthening Communities! Seeking Justice!
In 1996, Dr. Moore founded America & MOORE Research & Consulting, a research and consulting firm. The team, which consists of several on-call presenters in addition to Mr. Moore, has given interactive and motivating presentations to students K-college. Presentations have also been given to parents, community members and organizations, and city and state government managers, focusing on issues of diversity, race relations, community, stereotypes and self-esteem.
